Moving Out of Apartment - the perfect guide for every tenant

As a tenant, one of the most important things to be aware of is the policy when it comes to your lease and security deposit, however, there are several other aspects to consider as well. The excitement of moving out and renting a new place might be getting to you but there are a few things that should be kept in mind before you move.

We prepared a short guide that explains everything you need to know in order to be prepared when moving out of your apartment. But first, why do you need such guide at all?

Well, besides helping you organize your belongings, a moving out of apartment guide allows you to ensure that all necessary steps are taken while you transition to your new place. Moving out can never be as simple as it seems, which is why you will need a checklist to assist you in ticking off the necessary steps before handing over the keys to your landlord and keeping you on track as you move out.

Finding and Securing an Apartment

We hope that as you begin your move-out of apartment process, you have already found the right place to live. If you haven’t got one, this is the right time to start looking for an apartment that suits your needs, for example determining the number of rooms available, estimating the distance for your travel to the workplace, a pet-friendly environment, and ending with access to parks or outdoor areas.

One of the most important things when renting a new place is the security deposit and the monthly rent, thus make sure the condition of deposit reimbursement is crystal clear. Talking to your prospective landlord will help you find the ideal apartment, so make sure you take some time off to go to those meetings.

After you have completed all the necessary paperwork for your new apartment, we suggest starting the moving-out process at least 30 days before the moving day.

Key General Points When Moving Out of Apartment

Moving out of apartment is a reasonably big project to tackle, and it is not simply limited with just finding a good movers. Therefore, here is the list of some general points to remember when moving out, that consists of more than just packing and moving:

  1. Securing the documents – Obtain all documents related to your tenancy along with the information you need for your deposit protection scheme. Include a copy of your receipts for household bills, maintenance, repairs, and other property services.
  2. Transferring & canceling monthly services – Be sure to review all the contracts with your utility companies, and any providers of telephone, TV, Internet, or any other services that are linked to your current address. Cancel all the irrelevant subscriptions and services or find out if you can get them transferred to your new address.
  3. Packing & Organizing – To avoid stressful last-minute packing, we recommend you start packing at least a week, or ideally two weeks before your move. So that you will have everything ready and won’t have to scramble at the last minute. Make a list of the number of items in each room and identify where you want those items in the new place. This way you will be able to provide clear instructions to movers and save time.
  4. Record the status of the apartment – Remember to take before, when you move in, and after, when you move out, pictures of the apartment. This way you won’t have to pay any damage fees (if any) later claimed by the landlord when you move out. Better yet, make sure the before pictures are included in the contract upon signing a new lease agreement, especially if there is clear damage upon moving in. This would prevent the landlord from claiming your liability for such damages later when you move out.
  5. Find a moving company – when looking for a moving company, remember to avoid the end and beginning of the month, since there is always a higher demand, which brings rates up. Also, always try to look for reviews, check local moving company’s website, and give them a call to understand the level of customer service they provide. Chances are if they have good customer service support, it is likely that they will solve any issues that may occur on a moving day.

Tip: Most moving companies offer packing services with a specialist who will assist you through the entire process. To help you out, we have listed down the top moving companies in Ontario specific to each area. Tips Before the Moving Day

In order to make your moving experience an easy one, we suggest you complete these steps before the moving day:

  1. Ensure every room in the apartment is well cleaned, and there is no stain left in the apartment. All floors, walls, windows, doorknobs, and light switches should be cleaned. If you can’t wipe away stubborn stains from corners, use a vacuum hose extension.
  2. Inspect all the appliances in the apartment and replace any faulty light bulbs.
  3. If there are carpet stains, make sure they are removed. Have the carpet professionally cleaned, if necessary.
  4. Make sure all your belongings are removed from your apartment lockers and the lockers are thoroughly cleaned.
  5. If the moving company is going to park a large straight truck, make sure that there is space available in the vicinity. For easier moving in and moving out, check if there is a loading dock or a loading bay in and around the property.
  6. During the last week of your move, be sure to inform the front desk of your apartment about your move. Confirm if all the administrative work has been completed, as some buildings may require an insurance policy from the moving company for a certain amount.
  7. Lastly, make sure that the elevators are booked on both ends, for pick up and drop off, in order for movers to be able to use the elevator without any interruption while moving your items.
  8. We suggest a week before moving to start organizing the items into different boxes and label them as per your convenience. During your last week of packing and moving, notify current and new companies, such as gas, electricity, and your local authority, of your move and new address.
  9. Remember to take out and dispose of any trash and recycling that may have accumulated during the last week of your stay.

Supply List for a New Apartment

Moving out can be stressful at times, and you may miss out on things you need to buy before your move. To make the process easier, we have created a list of things you need to buy before you move out, so you can do it all at once!

  1. An essential first-aid kit that contains band-aids, a thermometer, an ace bandage, antiseptic wipes, and tweezers.
  2. Chargers for major electronic devices, such as your phone, tablet, and laptop; batteries for those items that cannot be recharged.
  3. Bring easy-to-prepare meals such as pasta and sauce, cereal and milk, and bread along with cooking utensils and gadgets that are capable of making these easy meals.
  4. A basic supply of toilet paper, paper towels, tissues, and soap. It would also be useful to have deodorant, moisturizing cream, plus towels and washcloths for cleaning.

In the midst of ticking all these things off your list and completing all the legal actions, you might not want to miss out on your deposit return! Agents can release deposits only when the landlord and tenant are both in agreement.

As long as you take good care of your rented apartment, you deserve a refund of your deposit, and this checklist will help you to get it. Be sure that both you, as the tenant, and the landlord are on the same page so that you, the landlord, and the next person moving into the apartment will have no issues and can settle in quickly.
