Moving Distance

Local moving refers to the process of relocating items from one place to another within a relatively short distance, typically within the same city or region (usually under 100 kilometers or miles, however, it can sometime be up to ~400 kilometers or miles and take several days to complete).

Example: Moving from an apartment in downtown Toronto, ON to a new home in a nearby city like Mississauga, ON.

Long-distance | Interstate | Interprovincial moving refers to relocating items over a significant distance, typically across province or state lines or more than 400 kilometers or miles from the starting location.

Example: Moving from a house in Toronto, ON to a new home in Vancouver, BC.

International moving refers to relocating belongings from one country to another, involving customs regulations and international shipping via sea or air.

Example: Moving from a home in Toronto, ON, to a new residence in Tokyo, Japan.

Coverage & Insurance

Standard coverage –

any established moving company is required by law to provide a minimum amount of coverage that is part of services.

This number, typically 60 cents, refers to the amount of money you will receive per pound of damaged or lost goods. This coverage is a bare minimum and should not be relied upon to cover you for any significant damage.

For example, if you have a TV that weighs 20 pounds, you would only be entitled to $12.00 of compensation if the TV is damaged in transit.*

*In other words, in case there is above mentioned claim to get compensation for damaged or lost item, you will be relying on the moving company to decide what amount they would compensate you, which usually would not be more than $100 or $200, even if it is a TV, mainly because of this standard coverage rule.

Full-replacement value coverage –

the amount of money to purchase a new replacement for a damaged item regardless of the age of the item. Full-replacement value coverage is NOT insurance.

Most valuation policies require the entire load be covered – not just specific items.

For example, usually moving companies have minimum declared value which is $10,000 and the fee for it may range from $90 (being low fee) to $180 (being high fee).

Here are couple examples of declared value and associated fee amounts:

  • $10,000 – from $90 to $180;
  • $20,000 – from $180 to $360;
  • $30,000 – from $270 to $540, etc.

Insurance –

Some moving companies may use 3rd party insurance providers to issue an actual insurance policy for clients according to the moving service they choose. This is more often the case for international moves. There are usually 2 main options of:

  • Total loss (the entire shipment (container, skid, etc.) get lost or damaged (i.e. fire))
  • All risk (the individual item get lost or damaged)*

*only applicable with full services done by a moving company (aka full packing done by a moving company and not client)

This options works similarly to Full replacement value coverage, where client must declare value of the shipment and pay premium, however in this case client must receive an actual insurance policy for their move.

Here are couple examples of declared value and associated fee amounts:

  • $10,000 – from $90 to $180;
  • $20,000 – from $180 to $360;
  • $30,000 – from $270 to $540, etc.

Why It's Important?

Being part of a well-known association or affiliation is important for a moving company because it boosts credibility, ensures trust, and demonstrates a commitment to high standards of service.

General criteria to join an association:

  1. Licensing and Insurance: The company must be legally licensed and insured.
  2. Quality Standards: It should meet specific service standards, such as safety and handling.
  3. Code of Ethics: The company must follow ethical business practices.
  4. Experience and Reputation: Proven track record and positive customer reviews.
  5. Financial Stability: The company must demonstrate sound financial health.

For instance to join the International Association of Movers (IAM), several key criteria must be met:

  1. Operational Experience: The company must have been in business for at least one year & completed certain number of international moves.
  2. Business License: A valid business registration license must be provided,
  3. Sponsorship: The company needs two sponsorship letters from current IAM members.
  4. Identity Verification: Government-issued photo identification is required for each principal owning 5% or more of the company.
  5. Membership Dues: Annual subscription fees must be met.
